Prior to any treatment a thorough case history will be taken for the animal and veterinary permission confirmed. Important details are current and past injuries, management and exercise routines, behavioural changes and general lifestyle of the animal.

Static assessment and gait evaluation

Juli will examine the animal standing initially looking for any musculoskeletal asymmetry or abnormalities.  Palpation is also important to highlight any regions of filling or heat indicating an ongoing inflammatory/healing responce and restriction in the range of motion from a joint or limb.

The animal will be observed in motion.  Juli will usually ask horses to be lead in straight lines in walk and trot, then lunged and possibly ridden if appropriate and facilities allow.  Dogs are also seen lead up or loose in walk, trot and canter as appropriate.

The initial history and assessment provides a picture of the animal’s lifestyle, performance requirements, and conformation and isolate any problems. From this Juli will identify the most appropriate treatment plan for the animal.

Palpation of a horses Atlas bone feeling for any

forward (cranial) or backward (caudal) tilt.  Tension

in the muscles at the connection between head and neck

can lead to, or be a cause of, resistance and an unwillingness to work
